Maryland secured a major transfer portal commitment with the addition of former five-star guard DJ Wagner, giving the Terrapins a proven backcourt option heading into a crucial 2026–27 season.
After a disappointing 12-21 win-loss record, Maryland entered the offseason needing both talent and experience. Wagner checks both boxes. The former Kentucky and Arkansas guard arrives with one year of eligibility and a clear opportunity to reset his trajectory while taking on a featured role.
DJ Wagner Brings Experience to Maryland
Wagner was the No. 1 combo guard in the 2023 recruiting class. He began his career at Kentucky before following John Calipari to Arkansas.
He averaged 7.4 points and 2.4 assists per game in limited minutes, largely due to a crowded backcourt. However, there were encouraging signs beneath the surface. His 3-point shooting improved to a career-best mark, and his decision-making improved with time.
For Maryland, these subtle improvements matter as Wagner is arriving as a high-upside guard who still has something to prove.
The Terrapins’ roster overhaul has been aggressive, and Wagner fits seamlessly into that plan. With several departures and a lack of consistent guard play last season, Maryland needed a player capable of handling the ball, creating offense, and play more minutes.
That’s exactly what Wagner has done before. During his earlier run at Arkansas, he logged over 34 minutes per game while running the offense, showing durability and control. In a system that needs stability at the point, his experience could be invaluable.
What This Means for Maryland Moving Forward
With Wagner now joining the team, Maryland’s offseason momentum continues to build. Combined with a strong incoming recruiting class and multiple transfer additions, the Terrapins are positioning themselves for a significant turnaround.
Fan reactions to the move have been largely optimistic. Some believe Maryland could push toward preseason Top 25, while others see Wagner as the missing piece in stabilizing the offense.
“Maryland probably a preseason top 25 team now,” a user wrote.
“Steve Roccaforte strikes again! One of the best recruiters !!” another wrote, praising the coach for recruiting the star player.
Another fan wrote: “I have never seen the guy take a play off. Always 100% effort.”
There’s still work to be done, but one thing is clear: this is no longer a passive rebuild.
Landing DJ Wagner is a statement. Maryland is aiming to compete again, and with a former five-star guard leading the charge, the path to March Madness next season looks promising.
