Buzz Williams’ first season in charge of the Maryland Terrapins was not a success. The Terrapins finished with a 12-21 record and second-to-last in the Big Ten standings. The Terrapins now face a challenging period in the transfer portal.
Two players have already announced their departure, and a plethora of seniors are leaving due to a lack of eligibility. If the team wants to improve next season, it will need to attract significant talent through the portal.
While no incoming transfer has been announced, the Terrapins are doing better on the recruiting side, with the No. 11 player in the class of 2026 and several incoming four-star recruits.

Buzz Williams’ Midseason Message to Maryland fans
Buzz Williams would be the first to admit that the Terrapins didn’t do well in 2025-26. He admitted as much midseason, shortly after the start of conference play. During a postgame press conference in early January, he said:
“Whether you’re at home, whether you’re on the road, we’ve got to continue to search for these margins of improvement and chase after it with a relentless spirit.
“I’ve got to do a better job. And I’m trying to professionally, with great poise, to apply appropriate pressure to everyone in the program for those margins. Because when you win it’s not one thing and when you lose it’s not one thing. And we are doing a good job collecting the things that have prevented us from winning. And we’re salvaging and stopping a lot of those things.”
While he wasn’t able to turn those words into reality in 2025-26, he will have an opportunity to improve during this offseason. Recruiting and the transfer portal are sure to be his key weapons in this process.
