Mark Pope’s Kentucky Might Be in Trouble After Missing Out on Tyran Stokes

Mark Pope’s Kentucky is projected to continue its high-stakes NIL spending, with the 2026-27 roster expected to have a top-tier budget of approximately $21 million to $23. The school’s deal has expanded from last year which would help the Wildcats manage outside funding, sponsorships and NIL distribution.

Following the second round exit, many people questioned the massive investment. Mark Pope was also the recipient of online trolling. The transfer portal hasn’t been very kind to Mark Pope. Multiple players have rejected the chance to play for Mark Pope and the biggest talent was Tyran Stokes. Now the squad is bleak and without a sure short star in the ranks, not many consider Kentucky as a real contender.

“NEW: Kentucky’s Roster is essentially finished at this point. Without a surprise late “star” commitment, this is likely Kentucky’s starting 5, and main rotation. (Including 1 more C)

Not gonna post a Portal Big Board, as Kentucky sits officially with 0 public targets at this moment. Seems like they’ll fill the last couple rotational spots with International Players.

6 International Prospects on the board:

    SF: Stefan Joksimovic.

    SF: Nicolas Martinez.

    PF: Hugo Yimga.

    PF: Cameron Houindo.

    C: Wini Silva.

C: Márcio Santos. (Commitment Watch?)” Kentucky’s scout posted on his X account.

    Kentucky’s NIL budget for 2025-26

Mark Pope and Kentucky had a huge NIL budget in the 2025-26 season. The team included top renturnees like guards Otega Oweh, Collin Chandler and forward Trent Noah. The transfer portal budget also brought in the likes of Malachi Moreno, Jasper Johnson, Mouhamed Dioubate, Andrija Jelavic and Jayden Quaintance.

Despite a deep bench and a promising squad, Kentucky had a rather disappointing season. They had a 10-8 SEC record with 22-14 overall. The season was filled with multiple injuries to key players which made it difficult for Mark Pope to navigate his starting 5 over the course of the season. The squad was reportedly $22 million worth in NIL.
