Tyran Stokes was linked to the Kentucky Wildcats over the past few weeks. However, the consensus five-star recruit decided to commit to the Kansas Jayhawks. Following this decision, reports surfaced that the forward had already signed his non-revenue share paperwork with the program before visiting Lexington earlier this month.
After his commitment, Stokes arrived in the city of Lawrence on Wednesday. He was asked to share his thoughts about beginning his collegiate journey with the Kansas Jayhawks.
“It’s a blessing just to be on campus as, you know, a committed player, committed Jayhawk,” Stokes said. “Just so you know, I’m here, I’m signed. So, just being at home, this feels great, being with the coaches.
“Just the culture, the atmosphere that, you know, I get to play in, being under coach Self, coach KT, all those great dudes. He’s coached guys like me before and he’s put guys in my position to strive and do great. So, just being able to, you know, trust in his plans that he has for me,” he added.
Tyran Stokes is the No. 1 prospect in the recruiting class of 2026.
Kansas coach Bill Self shares thoughts after securing Tyran Stokes’ commitment
After Tyran Stokes signed with the Kansas Jayhawks, Bill Self released a statement talking about the situation. He expressed his excitement about the five-star prospect and is hopeful of success in the coming days.
“Yesterday was a big day for our program, landing the consensus number one player in the 2026 class,” Self said. “Tyran is as versatile a youngster that I’ve ever recruited. He can score and he’s a terrific rebounder. He’s powerful and can be a great facilitator, and maybe what he does best is pass the basketball.
“He’s had far more exposure to basketball than most kids and will come in here with the ability to live up to the lofty expectations that will be placed on him by others. … We look forward to welcoming him and his mother into our Kansas basketball family,” he added.
Last season, Bill Self and the Jayhawks qualified for March Madness. However, St. John’s eliminated them in the second round, ending their hopes of competing for the national championship.
