One of the brightest talents in this year’s college basketball freshman class has been Arkansas’ Darius Acuff Jr. John Calipari, in his esteemed career, has built a reputation for coaching some of the most talented guards. Some of them are Derrick Rose, John Wall, De’Aaron Fox, Jamal Murray, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Tyrese Maxey, and now Darius.
Arkansas star has been a little underrated all season. But Darius is now getting his due. He is averaging 22.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.5 assists. He swept multiple SEC awards. He won both SEC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards. Acuff also led Calipari’s Arkansas to an SEC tournament championship. Arkansas looks ready for March Madness, and Darius is a major component.
Recently, Darius Acuff Jr. became only the second player after LSU legend Pete Maravich to lead the conference in both points and assists in the same season. He also became the 28th player to complete 700+ points, 200+ assists, and 100+ rebounds; first since Ja Morant in 2017. The SEC tournament put Darius in everyone’s minds. Now he has also broken a record set by Stephen Curry.
Darius Acuff passed Curry for the fifth-most 30-point games by a freshman guard in NCAA history. Darius averaged 30.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game in the SEC tournament. He was also shooting 50% from the three-point line.
