Kelvin Sampson Reveals Two Off-Court Reasons for Kingston Flemings’ Houston Success

Houston Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson recently revealed a couple of reasons as to why his freshman, Kingston Flemings, has already made an impact on his program in just less than a year.

On Thursday, March 26, Sampson and his Cougars will face Coach Brad Underwood’s Illinois Fighting Illini in the Sweet 16 of the March Madness on neutral grounds, the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

In a post by @SportsTalk790, Sampson’s quote from his press conference ahead of the aforementioned game was highlighted, as he was asked about Flemings. The tenured tactician shared two reasons from an off-the-court perspective as to why Flemings has done well for Houston this season.

“When you’re a freshman coming into a program like ours that has had sustained success, you better come in with the right attitude & respect with common sense. Kingston has been both. He established himself. No ego,” Sampson was quoted as saying.

As mentioned, Flemings in his first year of college basketball under the tutelage of coach Sampson and the Cougars. So far, he has helped Houston uncork an overall record of 30-6 (14-4 Big 12), as they have made it deep into the 2026 NCAA tournament. Flemings is presumably hoping to take the Cougars back on the collegiate hoops mountaintop after coach Sampson and company made it to the 2025 national title game.
