The Dallas Mavericks fired their head coach Jason Kidd on May 16th after an abysmal 2025-26 season. They had a record of 26-56 and ended the season 12th in the Western Conference. Dallas has been on the search for their next head coach for a couple of months. They are now reportedly expected to pursue Duke’s Jon Scheyer and Michigan’s Dusty May.
Ever since the Luka Doncic fiasco, the Mavs have been searching for stability. They drafted Duke’s Cooper Flagg as the No. 1 pick and planned to form team around him. Despite Flagg’s Rookie of the Year season, Mavs were far from ideal. The Dallas Mavericks president Masai Ujiri and GM Mike Schmitz are reportedly exploring options with an open mind. There were even rumors of an interview for South Carolina’s Dawn Staley.
Dusty May led the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship last season. So looking at his direction does not seem like the craziest idea. Michigan HC’s willingness for the next big step is also a question. Jon Scheyer, on the other hand, might be the answer considering the presence of Cooper Flagg. However, analyst Jeff Goodman thinks neither of them are ready to become NBA coaches.
Field of 68’s, Rod Dauster shared how college basketball’s evolvement into a much more professional set up would help college basketball coaches aim for more NBA positions.
“Scheyer to me, I just don’t see it. I don’t see it at this point. There’s also a different grind in the NBA. And when you have a young family like Scheyer has, he’s set up right now at Duke. He’s got this thing kind of figured out. He played at Duke. Young kids, I just don’t see him going into the NBA lifestyle,” Goodman said about Jon Scheyer (1:43).
“But again, that Dallas situation a little bit better than most because you’ve got a maybe a top 10 player in the NBA over the next few years in Cooper Flag, a guy that you know well,” he added.
“Dusty obviously coming off the national title. I think he’s probably a year away as well from really being in the mix for one of these jobs,” Goodman said about Dusty May.
Rob Dauster explains why NBA teams would prefer coaches like Jon Scheyer, Dusty May and Todd Golden
Both Dusty May and Todd Golden have proved themselves in the college basketball by winning the national championship with Michigan and Florida respectively. While Jon Scheyer is yet to taste that ultimate achievement. However, there are still the type of coaches NBA teams will look to appoint, as per Dauster.
He took examples of Tom Izzo and Dan Hurley comparing them to coaches like May, Golden and Scheyer. He compared the mentalities, plays on the court and approach in the locker room. While Izzo and Hurley are both known for their intensity and their no nonsense remarks to the players, Dauster believes a little more laid approach might be preferred more by the NBA teams. According to Dauster, Dusty May, Jon Scheyer and Todd Golden at least match that profile, if not the other criterias.
