Mark Pope has been busy the past few days revamping the Kentucky Wildcats roster for the upcoming season. After an underwhelming 2026 recruiting class, he had to pull a few moves to strengthen their chances of being a championship contender.
One of the biggest acquisitions of the team has been former Iowa State star Milan Momcilovic. The forward withdrew his name from the draft and decided to continue his collegiate career in Lexington.
While making these important offseason decisions, Mark Pope was also in vacation mode, enjoying some time off with his family. A photo of him went viral on social media, where his face had a tired look despite being on a family trip.
“Mark Pope was definitely losing sleep over Milan Momcilovic during his trip to Costa Rica. Thanks for getting it done, coach!” analyst Casey wrote in the caption of the post
Others also chimed in, sharing their reactions to Pope’s tired look in the comments.
“I hope the dude gets it done. So rooting for it to succeed. Such a good guy,” one fan wrote.
“Is it me or has he aged faster at Kentucky? Must be stressful fr,” another fan commented.
“One of the best coaches in the country. Better than Self, Izzo, Hurley, etc,” a fan wrote.
“You’re the best go Big Blue,” another fan said.
“Bearded Pope would feed generations,” one fan said about the coach’s look.
The upcoming season will be a pivotal point for Mark Pope’s future in Lexington. Since taking over Kentucky in 2024, he’s made March Madness in both seasons. However, after a Sweet 16 finish during his debut campaign, the Wildcats regressed during the 2025 campaign, losing to Iowa State in the Round of 32.
Milan Momcilovic was a key player responsible for the Cyclones’ victory over Pope’s team in the NCAA Tournament. Last season, he played in 37 games and averaged 16.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.
Trent Noah shares his honest thoughts on Mark Pope’s recruitment improvement
After Kentucky missed out on top 2026 recruits such as Tyran Stokes, there were a lot of questions surrounding Mark Pope. However, it looks like things are slowly improving for the program.
On Tuesday, Kentucky forward Tren Noah shared his thoughts on Pope’s recruitment efforts after Milan Momcilovic’s signing.
“It’s huge,” Noah said. “He’s obviously a really good player. We got see firsthand last year. Obviously, shoots great. I know coach Mark Pope is bringing in good people in the locker room. So that’s kind of another big thing for us.
“I’m super excited to get on campus here soon and get to work.”
Kentucky has not won a national championship since the 2011-12 season. That was when they defeated Kansas to lift the coveted trophy.
