Arkansas Razorbacks head coach John Calipari traveled south of the border to Mexico to watch top-25 overall recruit Davion Thompson at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup, according to Rivals.
Last week, the 6-foot-2 point guard included the Razorbacks among his top four schools, alongside Baylor, Michigan, and Vanderbilt. His commitment decision is expected to come by June 10.
Thompson played for Link Academy (MO) last season and is currently representing the USA U18 team. On the Nike EYBL Circuit with Meanstreets, he averaged 21.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He shot close to 52% from 3-point range.
Thompson also once considered offers from Texas Tech, Kansas, Missouri, NC State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Ohio State, DePaul, Indiana, Iowa, and Illinois.
What Did Davion Thompson Say About John Calipari’s Arkansas?
Davion Thompson recently explained why he is interested in John Calipari’s Arkansas program. He cited the head coach’s proven track record of developing NBA-ready guards.
“Just the culture they have and the reputation that Coach Cal has,” Thompson told Rivals. “He has a lot of guards that come through, and he puts them in the NBA and in the best position to chase their dreams.”
The No. 22 player in the 2027 class also praised the coaching staff, who have been recruiting him since his sophomore year in high school.
“It’s pretty much the coaching staff, too,” he continued. “They’ve been on me since I was a sophomore or junior, so I have a good relationship with them. I like the visit when I went up there. Everything was good.”
Thompson’s NIL valuation stands at $570,000. He is the No. 6 overall player in his position and the No. 1 in his state. According to the On3 industry consensus, the Vanderbilt Commodores are the favorites at 36.6%, followed by Kansas at 31.0%. Arkansas is third with 10.3%. Ohio State and Indiana each have a 1.4% chance.
