UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley made his ambitions clear ahead of the NCAA men’s basketball championship game against the Michigan Wolverines on Monday. Hurley is often the candidate for several head coach vacancies, but the Huskies head coach don’t left any hint on where his future lies beyond UConn until now.
Ahead of the NCAA title game, he dropped a hint about his future.
Is Dan Hurley Leaving UConn?
No, Dan Hurley is not leaving UConn for any other college. The Huskies’ head coach knows this much: there is no college he would like to leave UConn for. However, an NBA opportunity would be considered in the future.
“I’m the UConn coach until the end, and maybe the NBA someday down the line,” he said.
Hurley has rejected any interest from North Carolina, which fired their head coach, Hubert Davis, and is searching for another man for the job.
Moreover, Hurley is no stranger to NBA offers as well. Before the Los Angeles Lakers signed JJ Redick, they were keen to hire Hurley as their head coach. However, the Huskies’ head coach turned down the opportunity to stay in Storrs. Even though the Lakers’ offer of six years worth $70 million was “obviously tempting,” he felt there were “too many reasons to be here” at UConn.
“It was obviously tempting,” Hurley said. “The Lakers organization is just incredible, once in a lifetime to be presented with the opportunity to lead one of the most storied franchises in sports. It was a good chance to get to know some amazing people, but in the end there were too many reasons to be here.
“You think about the two places you are trying to choose between. You are coaching the back-to-back champs at UConn or the LA Lakers. There aren’t many coaches who had to make that choice between those two options for your career.”
Hurley didn’t arrive at the decision on turning down the Lakers on his own. He met with his student athletes before learning they needed them more.
As we enter Monday’s championship game, Hurley will look to win his third national championship in four years.
