Having missed the ACC Tournament and early March Madness rounds, Duke Blue Devils star Caleb Foster returned in the team’s 80-75 Sweet 16 win against the St. John’s Red Storm.
In 19 minutes of action, Foster scored 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field, including 0 of 1 from the 3-point line. He also had three rebounds and two assists.
Foster suffered a fractured foot late in the regular season. He underwent surgery but returned in just three weeks’ time, which is unusually fast. When asked how he was able to return so quickly, Foster had a hilarious reply:
“I’ve been driving fast on a scooter for about two weeks. I’ve been every day just trying to be present and then just a lot of recovery, going early morning, late night with Jose and Nick. Credit to them just for willing me back and giving me an opportunity to come back and play.”
Foster also mentioned that the doctor told him he has an outside chance to return.
“I mean, obviously, first half of the Carolina game, I had a little injury,” Foster said. “I was real stunned. I didn’t know if I was gonna be able to bounce back from that. But as soon as the doctor told me that it’s a chance, I just took it and ran with it. And that’s been where my mindset been from here on out. And I just wanted to come out and just provide anything possible, experience, whatever the team needed. I just didn’t know what it will be needed, or what to expect, but just providing a boost out there any way I can.”
Jon Scheyer Reveals Impressive Update on Caleb Foster’s Injury
Caleb Foster was able to fast-track himself to provide some minutes on the floor for the Duke Blue Devils. This is impressive considering the fact that he had not even one minute of 5-on-5 action since resuming practice for basketball. Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer said:
“That’s the first time he’s going five on five with these guys. There hasn’t been one second of five on five since he’s come back. So I just think that speaks to what he did tonight.”
Interestingly, Foster had only just resumed practice and was still being evaluated as a game-time decision before the Sweet 16.
