After getting the No. 4 seed in the West Regional, John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks have proven to be a dominant team. They kicked things off against Hawaii and dominated the Rainbow Warriors in the first round.
However, they ran into trouble in the second round, as one of the most surprising teams in the tournament gave the Hogs the fight of their lives.
Many had already written off No. 12 High Point, but it showed a lot of grit during the second-round game against Arkansas, almost getting another upset and making March Madness live up to its name.
The Hogs had to dig deep and escape with an 94-88 win, with Arkansas now moving on to the Sweet 16. Yes, this means that the Razorbacks are still in the NCAA Tournament.
Their next opponent will be the No. 1 seed in the West Regional, and that is Arizona. The Wildcats have been dominant in the first round but had a closer challenge in the second round, with the team demolishing Long Island before having a closer-than-expected game against Utah State.
The Hogs are the reigning SEC champions, and their opponents, the Arizona Wildcats, are the reigning Big 12 champions. This means that this Sweet 16 showdown will also be a champion vs. champion matchup, as Arkansas defeated Vanderbilt to win the SEC title, while Arizona escaped Houston in an instant classic to win the Big 12 Tournament.
As for the tale of the tape, the Razorbacks are 28-8 after the first two rounds, while the Wildcats are 34-2. The winner moves on the the Elite Eight to face the winner of the Texas vs. Purdue game.
Both teams are led by star freshmen, as guard Darius Acuff Jr. has been quite the standout for Arkansas, while guard Brayden Burries and power forward Koa Peat have proven to be an effective freshman duo for Arizona.
When Does Arkansas Basketball Play Again?
