AJ Dybantsa has been largely inconsistent on the possibility that he may land in DC during the NBA draft. The Washington Wizards currently have the No. 1 pick and it is looking more and more like the BYU star might get picked first. However, his recent antics, such as wanting the No. 3 jersey, Trae Young’s jersey, to probably tank his stock, has raised some eyebrows.
The small forward has a lot of ties to the state of Utah, playing for Utah Prep in high school and then BYU for college, so there are rumors that he wants to go to the Jazz and is thus tanking his stock. However, a recent clip from Dybantsa’s Youtube channel has gone viral where he is promising to take Washington to the playoffs if they draft him.
“If I go to DC, I’ll make the playoffs… I’m gonna make sure I make it,” he said.
AJ Dybantsa was talking with New Orleans Pelicans star Jeremiah Fears during the NBA Draft lottery and combine, with Fears expressing his doubt that Dybantsa could pull off a miracle turnaround in DC. This soon led to the two bantering, with Dybantsa reminding Fears that the Pelicans had the second-worst record in the league last season.
The BYU star is locked in a three-way battle for that No. 1 spot along with Kansas’ Darryn Peterson and Duke’s Cameron Boozer. All three were also the top three recruits from the Class of 2025, with their rivalry spilling over to college. The three of them are also going to be one-and-done players, only spending one season with their respective teams.
Washington Wizards Have Better Chances Next Season, AJ Dybantsa Will Be The Icing On The Cake
The Wizards ended up with a 17-65 record last season, and this soon led to the team winning the draft lottery with the No. 1 pick. Before that though, the team had slowly been rebuilding, getting two veterans in Trae Young and Anthony Davis to reinforce their young core of Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, and Kyshawn George.
The Wizrds have not made the playoffs for quite some time, and the addition of a possible superstar in AJ Dybantsa could be the missing piece that this rebuilding team needs to end that playoff drought.
