Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self is all in with winning a potential third national championship despite concerns regarding his health, as he recently asserted. On Thursday, Jan. 29, collegiate basketball analyst Jon Rothstein uploaded a video to his Instagram account, featuring a recent interview with Self. Rothstein first asked the tenured tactician about his drive to win despite his health issues.
It has been reported that Self could not coach his team’s game on Jan. 20. He was hospitalized briefly due to dehydration, atrial fibrillation, and chest pain. Even with this setback, it is said that Self won’t have any long-term issues. This is exactly what Self wants to do: win his third national title.
“Yeah. I haven’t thought about it, but about 30 minutes so far today? Probably, I think about all the time, you know. I’m not saying we’ve done unbelievable. We’ve done fairly well. And the thing about it is, what drives you? Why more? And, the reason is because, you know, you got to get one and two so much better than one, and three would be so much better than two,” Self explained.
“That to me is what drives us, and that’s what drives me. And I wanna do this as long as we can compete at the highest level,” he continued.
“How often does Bill Self think about winning a third national title?,” Rothstein captioned.
Self and his Kansas-based program have already won national championships twice, back in 2008 and most recently in 2022. The tenured tactician has been serving as the Jayhawks’ head coach for over two decades now, starting his run with the team in 2003. Currently, the Jayhawks possess an overall record of 15-5 (5-2 Big 12), and are the fifth seed in the Big 12 conference.

Bill Self Said An Added Motivation For Him Is To Get Back To The NCAA Championship Game
Later in his interview with Jon Rothstein, Bill Self discussed another motivation he and his team have.
For Self and the rest of the Kansas Jayhawks, it boils down to getting back to their previous high level of play in the collegiate hoops landscape, along with the urge to get back to the national championship game and compete for the title.
“The last two years we have not at the highest level. Now, we still been good. We’ve still been competitive. But we haven’t been nationally in the game. And this year, I don’t know that we are quite yet. I think we can be very easily when we get all our pieces. So that’s what I want to do. I wanna be in the game. I wanna play in the games that count the most. And, that’s what drives us well,” Self shared.
