Kansas’ Darryn Peterson has gathered a lot of attention in his freshman season. He had everyone’s eyes, even when he was balling out in high school. Top-ranked 2025 recruit Darryn Peterson committed to the Kansas Jayhawks in November 2024. He chose Kansas over Kansas State, Ohio State and USC. He was one of highest ranked recruits for Bill Self with the Jayhawks.
Despite such hype, his freshman season has started with some troubles. After 10 impressive games, Peterson suffered a hamstring injury. Although the injury wasn’t a serious one, he still had to be away from action for the next 10 games. He also suffered a setback in his recovery when he experienced cramping during a workout session. However, fans did get some good news when Bill Self updated about his availability in the next game.
As per Bill Self, Peterson is ready to return to court for the battle against AJ Dybantsa’s BYU on Saturday. That will be a blockbuster matchup as AJ Dybantsa is the other big name in college basketball who has been on a brilliant run. He has played all season so far and is doing better stats-wise than Darryn Peterson. Despite injury struggles, Darryn Peterson has averaged 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 10 games played.
His best game so far has been against Baylor when he scored 26 points. Kansas HC Bill Self was so impressed with that game that he compared the freshman with one of the all-time greats, Kevin Durant.
“It was the closest thing to Durant that I’d seen. When Kevin came in here he had 26 at halftime and we couldn’t guard him. I had pros, lottery picks saying, “Man, I can’t guard him.” And we couldn’t. But it was one of those type of moments. But it happened within the flow. It wasn’t like it was forced. It happened within,” Bill Self said about Darryn Peterson.
“So we’re kind of figuring it out. But he’s got that. He’s got just a natural ability to go make a basket. And in today’s game, where everything is get to the hoop or shoot a three, he’s kind of brought back the Shai type game because he can go get his own. Inside the arc as well as anybody I’ve ever coached,” Kansas HC added.
Fans React to Bill Self Comparing Darryn Peterson With Kevin Durant
Fans were divided on whether it was right to compare Peterson to an all-time great like Kevin Durant.
“People gon see how good he actually is,” one fan claimed.
“They think this kid is Kobe too,” one fan said sarcastically.
“Man, stop it,” another fan commented.
“Nobody but Self believes this,” one fan dismissed the comparison.
“I think you guys misunderstood his point. I believe he’s saying his ability to score with ease at the college level is similar to Kevin’s when he was at Texas,” one fan explained.
“Really overhyping this kid,” another complained.
