Jon Scheyer’s Duke Blue Devils have always been blessed with some of the best talent in college basketball history. Their reputation helps attract top recruits. In the past two years, Scheyer has coached Cooper Flagg and Cameron Boozer. While Flagg ended up becoming the No. 1 draft pick in 2025, Boozer is touted to be in the top three this year.
Duke was once again rumored to have bagged a highly rated recruit, with a rumor about five-star AJ Williams finalizing a lucrative NIL deal with Scheyer’s team. Many were astonished by the money reportedly involved. As it turns out, however, the source was a satire account, and the rumor was false.
A satire page on X reported that the Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy forward agreed to a two-year, $4.8 million NIL deal with Duke on Saturday. Williams, in turn, cleared the air about the commitment rumor.
An Instagram post clarified that the account that posted was not a real report. They also shared AJ Williams’ reaction.
“I didn’t commit. That was fake,” Williams wrote.
Williams also commented with two laughing emojis under the post to further demonstrate that it was fake.
Williams is wrapping up his sophomore year at the moment. The McDonough, Georgia, native is ranked the top prospect among all five-star recruits in the Class of 2026. Most recently, the young talent made an appearance at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League with the Georgia Stars.
The Blue Devils are coming off their Elite Eight berth in the NCAA Tournament, losing to the UConn Huskies, who reached the title game.
Five Schools Have Expressed Interest In AJ Williams, But Not The Duke Blue Devils
According to 24/7 Sports, five schools have expressed interest in AJ Williams, but that group does not include the Duke Blue Devils. The schools are the Auburn Tigers, Cincinnati Bearcats, Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Indiana Hoosiers. None of the programs has made a formal offer to Williams, however.
