Jon Scheyer finally has his first portal win of the offseason that could quietly shape Duke’s frontcourt next season. Belmont transfer Drew Scharnowski has committed to the Blue Devils, giving Duke a versatile big man as the program prepares for another roster transition heading into the 2026-27 season.
After weeks of silence in the transfer portal, Duke made its move. And while Scharnowski may not carry the headline-grabbing profile of a five-star recruit, his skillsets suggest this could be a high-value addition.
A Breakout Season Put Drew Scharnowski on the Radar
Scharnowski arrives in Durham following a standout sophomore season at Belmont. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 10.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting an efficient 68% from the field.
He also contributed 1.3 blocks per contest, earning First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors along with a spot on the All-Defensive Team.
That all-around impact is what made him one of the more sought-after forwards in the portal. Ranked among the top 40 transfers nationally, he showcased steady growth from his freshman year into a player capable of influencing games on both ends of the floor.
Duke’s roster is once again not stable. With Cameron Boozer expected to depart for the NBA Draft and questions still surrounding the front-court rotation, Scharnowski provides immediate depth and flexibility.
His ability to defend multiple positions and operate as a connective passer fits well within Scheyer’s system. Duke has consistently prioritized bigs who can do more than just score and Scharnowski checks that box.
There’s also the possibility of him forming a strong defensive pairing if returning players stay in place. His rim protection and rebounding could allow Duke to maintain its identity as one of the ACC’s toughest interior defenses.
Fans Split on Duke’s Latest Transfer Portal Move
Some fans praised the addition, calling it a huge get and highlighting Scheyer’s ability to identify under-the-radar talent.
“The most Duke looking player ever,” one said.
Another wrote: “That’s how it’s done…. supplement your roster in the portal.”
“Jon Scheyer not messing around,” one wrote.
Others questioned the ceiling of the move. Critics pointed to his scoring numbers and mid-major background, suggesting Duke’s expectations have shifted compared to its traditional recruiting dominance.
“Duke fans gonna celebrate getting a 10 ppg scorer from the MVC like they’re getting a 20 ppg guy from the B10,” a user wrote.
Still, that skepticism might overlook what he actually brings. Not every addition needs to be a star..
For Duke, this move is about building a balanced roster. Scharnowski may not arrive as the face of the program, but his presence could have an impact on the program.
