Villanova got a massive boost for the 2026-27 season on Saturday as Italian center Luigi Suigo officially withdrew from the NBA draft and committed to Kevin Willard’s program.
The 7-foot-3 prospect, often called the “Italian Wemby” by fans, had spent weeks evaluating his options. However, due to uncertainty about being picked in the first round, he decided to head to college basketball and continue his development at Villanova.
The decision immediately sparked excitement among Wildcats fans, and many praised Willard for landing the international prospect.
“Kevin Willard masterclass,” one fan wrote.
Another fan predicted an even bigger future for the Italian center.
“He’ll be a lottery pick next year so this is the right decision for him,” a user wrote.
Others focused on what Suigo could mean for Villanova’s chances in the Big East.
“What a get for Nova. Gonna be a very underrated team next year. Kevin Willard man underrated roster builder,” another fan commented.
Some NBA fans admitted they were hoping Suigo would remain in the draft.
“Dam was hoping Spurs could maybe get him,” one fan wrote.
“Curious to see how Villanova uses him,” another wrote.
“He’s easily a top 10 pick next year,” another wrote.
Why Luigi Suigo Chose College Over the NBA
Suigo averaged 8.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game last season while playing for Mega Basket.
He was projected to be picked in the late first round to early second round, according to several mock drafts. And rather than entering the draft without guaranteed security, he chose a path that could significantly elevate his stock.
A strong season at Villanova would place him in a position to enter what many project to be a weaker 2027 NBA Draft class.
The Wildcats have already retained key players and have added talent through the portal, and with Suigo’s arrival, the team looks very much complete.
Jonathan Givony described the 7-foot-3 center as a “physical outlier” capable of protecting the rim, spacing the floor and finishing efficiently around the basket.
With Suigo now on the team, Villanova’s roster looks capable of making a strong push in the upcoming season. If the Italian standout adapts quickly to the college game, fans may end up looking back on this decision as one of the most important offseason moves in the Big East.
