“Taking Our Time”: Mark Pope Reveals Status of Assistant Coach Position Amid Jamal Crawford Link

Mark Pope has been busy getting his Kentucky squad ready for the challenges of the new season, and it appears things are going well. With Milan Momcilovic and Malachi Moreno now teaming up, the Wildcats look to be on course for a strong start to the men’s college basketball campaign.

But that won’t be the only change coming to Lexington this season. Pope will also be adding a new member to his coaching staff, and it seems like that decision might be close. As fans eagerly await the news of who the new assistant coach will be, Pope on Wednesday offered a hint at what the Big Blue Nation can expect.

“We’re taking our time with this last assistant coaching position,” Pope said.

“We’re trying to read the tea leaves on some decision making that the NCAA is going to make clear here over the next few weeks…that’s going to direct us kind of on what space we need to really focus on.”

    What’s the Jamal Crawford Connection?

Jamal Crawford has been heavily linked with the assistant coach position at Kentucky, with the NBA legend not outright denying interest in the role, and there’s a school of thought that suggests Pope is keeping the position open and constantly extending the deadline to make sure Crawford can apply officially.

Crawford is currently busy doing commentary around the NBA Finals, and many in BBN believe he’s the right man to help Mark Pope on the sidelines in the coming season. After all, he will bring lots of big-game experience even if coaching at the collegiate level isn’t something that’s been his forte.

Should Crawford be the man to take the job, Kentucky fans can expect even greater things in the 2026-27 campaign.
