Dusty May and Michigan made history when they won the national championship after 37 years. Michigan was victorious over Dan Hurley’s UConn rather. UConn did scare them with a comeback towards the end, but Michigan held their own to lift the NCAA title.
Dusty’s Michigan was impressive all season. They had a 37-3 overall record with a 19-1 record in the Big Ten. They won the Big Ten regular-season title and went on to achieve glory. This is May’s second team as head coach, and just the second year at Michigan. He took an underrated bunch and made them the best team in the country.
After the success, May had verbally agreed to a contract extension with Michigan. The new contract is supposedly valid through the 2030-31 season. However, he is yet to sign the contract officially. Many speculated that he is waiting for a more elusive offer or, better yet, an offer from the NBA. Dusty May recently broke his silence and talked about the delay in the official agreement.
“We’ve agreed to the broad terms. We announced at the Michigan State game last year, and I am signing it in July. Just because there’s i’s to dot and t’s to cross. To me, it’s a formality when I told him that I wasn’t going to even entertain another college job. In my mind, that was essentially signing a contract. And we would get the details worked out based on both parties feeling great about the deal,” Dusty May cleared up.
Dusty May’s contract details
May signed his first contract with Michigan in 2024. The two-year deal entailed a valuation of around $19.125 million. He signed a five-year contract.
According to the February 2025 extension, the deal was worth $25.5 million over five years, which paid around $4.6 million for the season in which he won the national championship. His buyout became $7.5 million. He is set to earn a $150,000 bonus on April 30. His new deal is a verbally agreed-upon extension as he shared after the national championship win.
