Caleb Wilson’s hand injury has drawn concerns for UNC as the season enters the final phase of the regular season before March Madness begins. The freshman forward suffered a fracture in his left hand while playing against the Miami Hurricanes. Wilson returned to the floor with a heavily wrapped hand. When imaging was done on his hand, it revealed a fracture.
Because of the fractured hand, the UNC star has been ruled out indefinitely and will miss upcoming games. Wilson is UNC’s leader in total points, rebounds, blocks and steals.
Recently, Duke legend Jay Williams shared his concern for the Tar Heels following Wilson’s injury and his uncertain return timeline.
“I’m worried about them. Now look, they could respond, but I think Caleb Wilson was the definitive character of this team. He was their DNA; he was their attitude,” Williams said.
Williams also took note of how UNC looked like an Elite Eight contender when they defeated the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils 71-68. However, he is not sure if the team will be able to do well without Wilson in big games.
“When they beat Duke, you looked at that team and said, ‘Oh, that’s a team that can get to the Elite Eight. That’s a team that can make a run,'” Wilson added. “But then when you watch them play in their next game, you’re like, ‘Well, is that a team that could be out in the first weekend?’ And then losing your definitive character, your attitude, I worry about whether that DNA can be sustained.
“I said last week, ‘Hey, this is a team that plays depending on the golf course they’re on,’ right? Like sometimes they play well, sometimes they don’t. And without him on the court, I don’t know which team is going to show up. And that worries me about them.”
UNC’s Caleb Wilson Confident About His Potential Return
Caleb Wilson is confident about his return this season.
Without Wilson in the second half, the No. 11 Tar Heels lost against an unranked Miami team 75-66 on the road. But UNC fans would be happy to learn about the commitment shared by their star player after the hand injury.
“I am grateful for whatever God is trying to tell me through this injury!!!” Wilson posted on social media. “I will be back Tarheel Nation. I LOVE THIS TEAM AND PROGRAM.”
The Atlanta native is averaging 19.8 and 9.4 rebounds per game. With seven regular-season games remaining for the 11th-ranked Tar Heels (19-5 overall, 7-4 in the ACC), the program faces a big task of doing well, as three of those games are against teams currently ranked in The Associated Press Top 25.
