“Not Some Unbreakable Machine Programmed to Seek and Destroy Opposing Teams”: Dan Hurley’s New Book Sheds Light on Personal Battles Amid On-Court Struggles

UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley has opened up on what exactly he has gone through in his 30-year coaching stint. Earlier on Wednesday, Sept 3. Hurley has announced his first book, titled “Never Stop: Life, Leadership, and What It Takes To Be Great,” which he co-wrote with best-selling author Ian O’Connor. The head coach dived deep into some of his personal battles.

According to an article written by The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, Hurley reasserted his love for the program despite previously admitting that he was close to quitting from his coaching duties to rest, given the immense pressure he faced. For Hurley, it’s about finding peace and being gratuitous.

“Listen, I cherish my job, my players, our school, our fans and our boosters. I’ve got the very best job in the country with the very best program in college basketball over the last quarter-century. All of that is hand-on-the-Bible true. But what’s also true is the massive toll that coaching takes on you and your family. The whole thing is exhausting. The seasons are excruciating even when they are going great,” he was quoted as saying.

“You rarely get to the national championship game and win it, so if the season ended the way I wanted it to end only two years out of my coaching life, then I was tortured for twenty-eight years. That’s a hell of a way to look at it. I’m not some unbreakable machine programmed to seek and destroy opposing teams and officiating crews over and over and over again. I’m human,” Hurley continued.

Hurley will enter his eighth year at the helm of the Huskies men’s basketball coaching staff in the upcoming 2025-26 season. Just last year, he led his team to an overall record of 24-11 (14-6 Big East), as they were unable to win their third straight national title in the 2025 NCAA tournament. They headed into postseason play as back-to-back national championship winners.

Dan Hurley Advertises His New Book on Instagram With the “I’m Human” Quote

After his first book was officially announced to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 3, Hurley posted about it on his Instagram account.

He included a couple of slides that show graphics of him and the aforementioned quote:

“I’m not some unbreakable machine programmed to seek and destroy opposing teams and officiating crews over and over and over again.”

    Dan Hurley captioned the post:

“What everyone sees on the court is only part of the story. The game begins long before the game. ‘Never Stop’ is out at the end of the month.”

Hurley’s new book is set to be released on Sept. 30 and will be available at retail outlets such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
