Duke Legend Jay Williams Faces Backlash From Fans For Showing Support To UNC Ahead Of Rivalry Showdown

Jay Williams is breaking the hearts of the Duke Blue Devils fans. Duke is set to play the North Carolina Tar Heels tonight. These two teams have one of the most iconic rivalries in college basketball, often referred to as The Battle of the Blues.

What makes their rivalry so iconic is that their current and former players, along with the fans, are deeply invested in it. They support their team with a lot of passion; their commitment is for a lifetime.

Jay Williams, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most decorated athletes from the Blue Devils program, was on ESPN’s College GameDay ahead of the matchup. What Williams did during the show is being considered blasphemy by Duke fans.

“I just wanna witness this for one second just to see how it feels because I never usually do this,” he said before leading the “TAR HEELS” chant with the North Carolina fans standing in the background.

A Duke legend led the UNC chant on TV.  Fans were fuming when a video of the same was posted on social media.

“A Wolfpack former player would never . They physically couldn’t. UNC an Duke really actually love each other,” a fan wrote.

“Jay Williams hits the Tar Heel chant Duke fans can’t even look,” a fan wrote.

“If he does that again @espn fire him on the spot.  We don’t want his chant,” a fan wrote.

“Just give him a honorary degree from UNC. He wants to be a Tarheel so bad,” a fan wrote.

“Jay Williams out here committing treason in real time. Duke alumni association about to send him a cease-and-desist with his diploma,” a fan wrote.

“Jay out here doing the Tar Heel chant on our rivalry day… some things never change 💀 Traitor behavior fr Duke fam we see you turning away too,” a fan wrote.

Williams’ jersey was retired by the Duke Blue Devils to recognize what he did for the program during his collegiate stint. Some fans want the Blue Devils to take his jersey down.

Jay Williams on the Best Arena in College Basketball

Williams has been on the College GameDay crew for the last eight years. He has travelled across the country and has enjoyed some of the best campus atmospheres in the country. A lot has changed since he graduated.

During last Saturday’s College GameDay, Williams talked about the best arenas in college basketball today.

“When I came here in 2012 and I came here for a game,” Williams said of Allen Fieldhouse. “I literally left this building saying, ‘I can’t hear myself think’…I now recognize that this is by far the best college basketball venue in America.”

During his college days, Williams used to think Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke’s arena, was the best in the country. But he changed his opinion in 2012.
