Dan Hurley and No. 3 UConn got handed their second loss (81-72) of the ongoing campaign. In another high-quality season so far, Rick Pitino and No. 22 St. John’s hit the jackpot when they snatched the Huskies’ 18-game winning streak. The two programs have been locking horns for a while now for Big East supremacy. Last season’s conference title for St. John’s proved that they are ready to go toe-to-toe with UConn and other teams.
For the first time, Pitino and St. John’s have won three games in a row against Hurley and UConn. Almost exactly a year ago, St. John’s won two games in a matter of days. A year later, Pitino’s side has done it again. They maintained their composure and took full advantage of UConn’s 16 turnovers. Red Storm’s Zuby Ejiofor led the floor with 21 points and 10 rebounds in an impressive double-double.
With a helping hand from basically the entire team, including strong displays from Dillon Mitchell, Ian Jackson, Bryce Hopkins, and some crucial buckets from Dylan Darling, it was a rather complete performance from Rick Pitino’s men.
Dan Hurley commented on UConn’s turnovers:
“We turned it over because we lost our f*cking mind and [St. John’s] has great defense. That’s a top-20 defense.”
UConn had phases in the game when they looked like their usual best. There were moments when they came back in the game. After a tied first half, the game hung in the balance. However, a 10-0 run from St. John’s pulled the game away from the Huskies.
Despite that, Dan Hurley’s team pulled it back to a 4-point game. Alex Karaban led his team and had a good game. Silas Demary Jr. led the Huskies with 18 points. However, he was also one of the major reasons why St. John’s crushed UConn towards the end and throughout the game. Silas recorded nine turnovers.
UConn Fans Slam Silas Demary Jr. After 9 Turnovers Lead to St. John’s Win
Dan Hurley said about Silas Demary Jr.:
“That’s the great adventure. It was a rollercoaster ride.”
He added:
“I thought we handled it pretty well. Silas, who’s changed our whole complexion of our season, just had one of those games where he did a lot of things great, except nine turnovers. That was the story of the game.”
However, fans online did not see the adventure side and blamed Silas for the loss.
“SILAS DEMARY JR!!!! 9 TURNOVERS!!!! A REPEAT OF HIS GEORGIA GAME LOLOLOL,” one fan trolled.
“In last two games against St. John’s, Silas Demary Jr. has committed 19 turnovers. 10 last year while with Georgia, and nine tonight,” another noted.
“And tonight Silas Demary Jr only had NINE turnovers. The last one coming on the biggest play of the game. Enjoy the ride home on Metro North you absolute f*cking losers,” one fan said.
“Silas Demary Jr with his second triple-double of the season. Turnovers count?” another fan joked.
“Silas Demary Jr may have had the worst game I’ve seen a college basketball player have. Unless he was gambling I don’t understand how you had 9 turnovers and missed every free throw at the end of the game. UConn does not deserve a Top 10 ranking again,” another fan speculated.
