Andrea Hurley, the wife of UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley, expressed her disappointment with St. John’s fans for apparently rooting against UConn during their Elite Eight game against Duke.
In an interview with the Field of 68, Andrea revealed that she had supported St. John’s when it faced Duke in the Sweet 16, so she expected Red Storm fans to reciprocate that. However, she was left disappointed.
“Okay. St. John’s fans,” Andrea said. “I grabbed [St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino’s wife] at the end of the [Big East Tournament championship game], and I was like, ‘How do you do this?’ And she, like, is the sweetest person. And I’m, like, ‘I was rooting for St. John’s.’ Like, do I want to play them? Probably not, but I didn’t want to play Duke either. So, we were rooting for St. John’s. And then we went to the [Elite Eight] game, all those St. John’s fans were rooting against us. And that broke my heart… So that’s really sad and I’m really hurt by that one. That was crappy.”
UConn had lost to St John’s in the Big East Championship Game earlier in the season.
However, the Huskies are still alive in the NCAA Tournament. They are in the Final Four, whereas St. John’s is out of the race after losing to Duke in the Sweet 16.
Dan Hurley Calls Wife Andrea “Jersey Boss Lady” After She Potentially Saves UConn From Elimination
The Elite Eight contest between UConn and Duke went down to the final second. With 0.3 seconds remaining, Braylon Mullins hit the game-winning 3-point shot. The moment was so electrifying that the Huskies’ bench almost went onto the court.
Since there was still some time remaining on the clock, the potential court-storming could have resulted in a technical foul, which would have given Duke a free pass back into the game. However, this disaster was avoided after Dan Hurley’s wife Andrea motioned the players back to the bench, knowing the game was not over yet.
“Yeah, she’s a boss,” Hurley said. “She’s the Jersey boss lady. And her language is colorful, too. I mean, she was grabbing people around the back of their warmups. And she doesn’t know anything about basketball, you know? I said to her on the plane, ‘This is wild. Three out of four years, you’re going to the Final Four. Did you ever imagine this with your life?’ And she’s like, ‘I didn’t even know Final Four existed until four years ago.”
Andrea certainly played her part in taking UConn to the Final Four. Now, it’s the job of the players and her husband to get the Huskies over the line.
