Dan Hurley Clears the Air on Head-to-Head Exchange With Referee After Wild Elite Eight Ending

Dan Hurley just reacted to one of his crazy moments on the court after UConn pulled off the unbelievable win against Duke. The bench went crazy after Braylon Mullins’ last-second three-pointer from the logo, which led to UConn’s 73-72 win over Jon Scheyer’s team. The celebrations went wild as the arena erupted, but Dan Hurley stood head-to-head in front of referee Roger Ayers.

This exchange has gone viral due to Hurley’s reputation more than anything else. Hurley is very public about when he disagrees with the officiating decisions. He wears his emotions on his sleeve and is always animated.

Many brought out multiple interpretations of the switch-up with Ayers. However, Hurley recently called Roger Ayers a “cool a** ref.” He explained what exactly happened.

“I thought he was coming over to chest-bump me to celebrate the shot. There were other points in the game where I had my arm around him, walking out of a timeout, we were cracking jokes and laughing,” Hurley said.

“He was just coming up to tell me, ‘Yo, it was .3.’ Oh, I think there’s going to be 3 or point 4 on the clock is what he was saying to me. And I was still so hyped from the shot going in that I was like, you know, like anyone would have walked up on me right there,” he explained.

Hurley added that although he hasn’t won every game Roger has officiated, and he has had his disagreements with him, he still has a good relationship with the referee on the court. Hurley praised Ayers’ calming personality and called him one of the best refs.

Referee Roger Ayers Reacts to Viral Dan Hurley Moment

In the aftermath of the game-winner, one second, Dan Hurley was animated and celebrating, and the very next second, his expressions turned dead serious as he looked right at the ref. Roger Ayers himself revealed the actual emotion of that moment.

NCAA insider Seth Greenberg reported that he asked Ayers about the incident, and the referee replied:

“Nothing happened. The ball went in. I was running back. They were celebrating. (Dan Hurley) leaned in, said something to me. I said something to him. It was absolutely nothing.”
