Former Michigan Wolverines coach John Beilein is not a fan of UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley, given the latter’s sporadic behavior and volatile personality.
On Wednesday, April 1, sports analyst Zach Gelb uploaded a clip from the recent episode of his podcast to his X/Twitter account, as he had Beilein as a guest.
Gelb asked Beilein for his thoughts on Hurley, who is now leading his team to another deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Gelb added that he is a fan of Hurley’s sideline conduct during games, but the veteran coach disagreed. Beilein said he can’t behave like Hurley during games, as he has to think about the task at hand.
“ Well, it’s just me personally. I couldn’t very, you know, I would get one technical a year, maybe, and I just, I was a guy that could not coach the game and argue with the officials. There are several coaches that every call made against them is a bad call. Every call. It can’t be that way. I could not be that guy because while I’m arguing, I have to be thinking about the next play. I was always, ‘What’s next? What’s next? What’s next?” Beilein said. (0:11)
“If I’m arguing with an official, it’s two plays later, and I missed it. That was just me,” he continued.
For now, Beilein continues to be a college basketball analyst on CBS Sports, as he retired from coaching both collegiate hoops and professional basketball six years ago. In Hurley’s case, he is gearing up for the Huskies’ upcoming, highly anticipated matchup against coach Brad Underwood’s Illinois Fighting Illini in this year’s NCAA Final Four.
John Beilein Doubled Down On His Take On Dan Hurley By Saying He Is Not Letting Out A Great Message
On the same podcast, John Beilein continued his take on Dan Hurley’s coaching style, saying that it is not a great message for the fans by a coach of Hurley’s stature.
For Beilein, he prefers it for a coach to have a specific decorum, a belief Beilein has even if he has retired.
“ I don’t think it’s a great message. I don’t think it’s a great message to be, you know, on the sidelines, and be, you know, out of control at times. I don’t think it’s a great message to send or press conferences before games, everything. If your chemistry professor was acting like that, what would people do? So, I think there’s a certain decorum to coaches that I prefer, but what do I know? I’m sitting home right now. What do I know?” Belein shared. (0:44)
