Dan Hurley’s UConn Huskies have not been themselves as of late, losing two out of their last four games. In February so far, they have fallen to No. 17 St. John’s (On February 6th) and against Creighton just this Wednesday. That’s the state of things for the Huskies as they approach a game against Villanova this Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to which they arrive with a 3-2 record in the month of February.
Hurley will be the first to admit that things need to improve and that the team needs to have a show of force against the Wildcats tonight:
“When you get your a** kicked… There’s gotta be some type of championship response,” Hurley recently told the media
Despite their flaky February, the Huskies remain the No. 5 team in the nation with an overall record of 24-3 and a conference mark of 14-2. They currently sit at No. 2 in the Big East standings, one game behind the St. John’s Red Storm.
Dan Hurley Knows Exactly What Needs to be Improved for UConn to Go Back to its Old Form
In the same press conference, Dan Hurley opened up about what he thought went wrong in the 91-84 defeat to the Creighton Bluejays. Here’s what he said about his team’s performance on Wednesday’s defeat:
“The defense has been a joke,” Hurley said in the postgame press conference. “It was a game of just really bad individual defense. “Our defense has been so bad. We’ve been playing with fire. Obvioulsy, overall defense was just dreadful.”
“You’re in trouble to start the game when you’re subbing people within the first minute.”
The reality is that UConn allowed four Creighton players to score 10 or more points, with Josh Dix scoring 21 points, Nik Graves 18, Fedor Žugić 14, and Blake Harper 12. Three Huskies players had a similar output, with Braylon Mullis scoring 25 points, Silas Demary 17, and Tarris Reed 15. The one player difference sealed the game for Creighton.
Despite coming from a defeat, the No. 5 Huskies are the favorites against Villanova, although not by much. According to DraftKings, they’re 2.5-point favorites, with the ESPN game predictor giving them a 57.2% chance of winning the game.
