Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope leads the race to secure Syracuse transfer Donnie Freeman. Previously, it was reported that the UConn Huskies had an edge over Kentucky in Freeman’s recruitment, but that does not seem to be the case.
According to Kentucky sports writer Wyatt Huff, Freeman is already in Lexington to visit the University of Kentucky, and he will only visit UConn once this is out of the way.
“UPDATE: Syracuse’s Donnie Freeman tells me that the reports of the Kentucky visit now being after the UConn one is NOT true. It appears the Kentucky one will in fact be before the visit to Storrs,” Wyatt Huff wrote on X.
Freeman’s recruitment could be a game-changer for either Kentucky or UConn. He is the No. 1 player in the transfer portal after averaging 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds at Syracuse.
For Kentucky, Freeman is the top priority as he could strengthen Mark Pope’s frontcourt rotation. However, landing him is not certain at this stage. He will only make his decision after visiting the Huskies as well.
Mark Pope’s Kentucky Loses Important Player to Transfer Portal
After leaving BYU and taking over the Kentucky Wildcats two offseasons ago, Mark Pope brought in Collin Chandler as his first recruit. Now, Chandler is leaving Kentucky after entering the transfer portal.
Chandler has entered the portal with a “do not contact” tag, meaning he’s not going back to Kentucky.
The 6-foot-5 guard from Farmington, Utah, played all 36 games, starting 31. He put up 9.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in addition to leading the team with 73 three-pointers on 41%. This is a major spike for the sophomore, who averaged just 2.7 points across 30 games in his freshman season.
Chandler’s leaving Kentucky is just the tip of the iceberg for Mark Pope’s program. The program has suffered numerous transfer-portal departures after its 22-14 season ended with a second-round loss in the NCAA Tournament to Iowa State.
