Wes Miller’s Cincinnati Bearcats have had a turbulent run this season. With one of the best defenses in the country, the Bearcats were expected to be stronger and more dominant than they’ve been so far in this season.
They ended their regular season run with a 63-73 loss against the TCU Horned Frogs. They went 9-9 in the Big 12 Conference and 18-14 overall. The Bearcats are now competing in the Big 12 Tournament.
The Bearcats started the tournament run with a strong 73-66 win against the Utah Utes. Surprisingly, their defense was ineffective in the second half, allowing the Utes to add 46 points on the board. However, their first-half lead helped keep them ahead of Utah.
Today, they’re facing the UCF Knights in the Big 12 tournament. It’s going to be another must-win game for the Bearcats. As for their chances of making the NCAA Tournament, they’re currently on the bubble.
There’s no denying that the Bearcats can compete against the best teams in the country. They’ve proved that they belong in that conversation throughout the season, despite their several ups and downs.
If they beat the UCF Knights today, they’ll face the No. 1 seed Arizona in the quarterfinals. Every game is going to be crucial for the Bearcats, and if they manage to make a successful run in the Big 12 tournament, their chances will increase significantly.
The Bearcats aren’t the only team trying their level best to secure a place in the March Madness bracket. However, wins over the UCF Knights and then Arizona could give them the edge that they’ve been looking for.
Wes Miller’s Cincinnati Bearcats Future is Uncertain
Wes Miller joined the Cincinnati Bearcats after a decade-long head coaching stint with the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Spartans. The program had high expectations from Miller, but he hasn’t been able to deliver so far.
This is his fifth season with the Bearcats, and he has yet to take the team to the NCAA Tournament. This could be Miller’s last chance.
“I’m just really proud of this team, their resilience and coming together and playing some of the best basketball in the country right now,” UC athletic director John Cunningham said. “I thought the fans were awesome, and I’m excited about the opportunity that remains.”
When he was asked about Miller’s future with the program, Cunningham declined to answer. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Bearcats decide to part ways with Miller after this season.
