Is Charles Bediako Allowed to Play for Canada? Eligibility Explained as he Eyes College Return Again

Controversial Alabama Crimson Tide center Charles Bediako recently suited up for another team, as he continues attempting to return to college basketball in the ongoing season. On Thursday, Feb. 26, Canada was matched up against Puerto Rico in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers, which was played on the latter’s home court, the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan.

To the surprise of many, Bediako actually played and logged minutes for his country, even as he is in the middle of ongoing legal battles regarding his collegiate hoops eligibility. This was confirmed in a post by X user @BamaRoundBall, who pointed out that Bediako was even inserted into the team’s starting lineup. The 23-year-old was seen posing in the team’s official jersey.

With this, collegiate basketball reporter Sean Paul mentioned that Bediako was suiting up for Canada just a day after his most recent legal move regarding his college hoops tenure. On Wednesday, Feb. 25, Bediako was reported to have filed an emergency motion in the Supreme Court of Alabama, which recently denied his preliminary injunction to continue playing in the current campaign.

Nevertheless, it seems as though Bediako is allowed to play in international competition for his nation while his college hoops eligibility remains in the air. On Feb. 10 of this year, Bediako’s five games already played for coach Nate Oats‘ Crimson Tide team were put on hold, as an Alabama judge ruled that Bediako is no longer allowed to play in college.
