Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies lost 63-69 to the Michigan Wolverines in the national championship game on Monday.
During the pre-game broadcast, former player Charles Barkley talked about Hurley’s legacy, saying he still has a long way to go.
“One thing tonight is really really significant also for two reasons. Number one, if UConn wins, Dan Hurley gotta be on Mount Rushmore. But if Michigan win, we will have seen one of the greatest runs in NCAA history. They have been beating the brakes off people for three weeks. I mean, the games haven’t been close,” Barkley said.
“And I say if Dan Hurley wins the third, he’s on the list. He’s already been a great coach, he’s already won two. But if you get to three, that takes you to a whole other level. But if Michigan wins, we haven’t even really talked about them. They have been just killing people,” he added.
The Huskies have played their third national championship game in the last four years. Dan Hurley led the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA titles in 2023 and 2024.
Dusty May’s Michigan crowned national champions vs Dan Hurley’s UConn
It was closer than what Dusty May would have preferred in the end. The Wolverines won 69-63 in a highly contested game. It was a poor night for 3-point shooting for both teams, but Michigan was more consistent in its plays than UConn.
Yaxel Lendeborg took his time to get into his rhythm, and he eventually did, but ended up with 13 points. Morez Johnson Jr. had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Elliot Cadeau scored 19 points and was the top scorer in the final.
For UConn, Alex Karaban was the top scorer, and even he was off his game. He scored 17 points and played every minute. It was a pretty dull night, and nothing stuck for the Huskies. They did conjure a comeback of sorts in the last eight minutes. But it was too little, too late.
