Michigan just heard the shocking news of its basketball coach Dusty May’s exit after he decided to move to the next level by accepting the job with the Dallas Mavericks.
Dave Portnoy, who is a Michigan superfan, shared his unfiltered reaction to the news and said that while he can’t get mad at a college coach wanting to go to the league, he would no longer be naming his horse in May’s honor.
Portnoy then released another video a few minutes later, sharing his thoughts on the situation and highlighting similarities between May’s and former Wolverines football coach Jim Harbaugh’s situations, as both coaches left their programs after winning a national championship.
“This isn’t going to another college program. This is a guy who’s going to win a national championship at Michigan.” Portnoy said. “He’s like, I need to challenge myself at the highest levels, the professional leagues. We saw with Harbaugh. Harbaugh wins at Michigan. He wants to challenge himself in the NFL. It’s what, unfortunately, the Michigan curse is. Because when you win, and you’re a Michigan man at the highest levels, it’s in our blood. It’s in our DNA. Like, we want the hardest challenge, the champions of the champions, leaders, and best. We want to go to the professional level and succeed on the highest professional level known to man.”
“Michigan men, you always strive for that highest level. So it absolutely sucks because when you win your national championships, as we did in football, as we’ve done in basketball, you’re going to lose guys who say that DNA, that maize and blue that courses through my veins, say, I need the next challenge.”
Analyst Predicts Head Coaching Search Difficulties For Michigan Post Dusty May’s Exit
Analyst David Cobb highlighted an inevitable problem Michigan will face now that Dusty May has decided to leave the program: the transfer portal.
Cobb added that while most college teams have worked hard and filled almost 98% of their final roster, Michigan finds itself in a sticky situation, as it would be a tough task to lure a high-caliber college coach from another team at this point in the offseason.
“I think Mike Boynton’s gotta be at the top of that list,” Cobb said.
The CBS analyst also said that Michigan would probably have to find its next head coach in the “retired group.”
