Dusty May led the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship after 37 years last season. After months of speculations, a deal between Dusty May and the Dallas Mavericks was finalized on Monday. Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg reacted to the news one day ahead of the 2026 NBA draft.
The reporter asked Yaxel what he thought about the possibility of playing for his college coach again in the NBA.
He answered, “I am gonna tell him, he better pick me up. If he doesn’t, I’m gonna be mad and I might block him. It would be amazing to be able to stick with him. I know me, Morez [Johnson Jr] and the guys, we talked about and we are all going to be happy for him regardless. But if we all get the opportunity to play there, it would be awesome.”
Lendeborg also said that having a Michigan players line up with the Mavs with May would be amazing. He shared that he was proud of his coach and was happy that May got what he wanted for his future.
Can Dusty May reunite with his Michigan stars in Dallas?
May is set to lead a team that is aimed to be built around last year’s Rookie of the Year: Cooper Flagg. However, there might be some practicality to what Yaxel Lendeborg wished for.
Lendeborg is projected to land between No. 10 and 13th draft pick. Dallas has the 9th pick in the draft. So if Dusty May and the Mavs management align, there is a strong chance that Yaxel might just get drafted as the No. 9 pick.
However, there might come one complication for May as another one of his Michigan stars is right around Lendeborg in the draft projections. Aday Mara is expected to land in the No. 9 to No. 15 range. So, the Mavs just might have to decide which Wolverine fits the pack the most.
Coincidentally, Morez Johnson Jr is also expected to be a top first round pick. He is projected to be between No. 12 and No. 14. So, Dusty May has a difficult decision on his hands as his first task in Dallas – choosing one of three Michigan stars.
