The UConn Huskies and the UCLA Bruins will meet today in the second round of the March Madness showdown in Philadelphia. Both teams are coming off hard-fought wins in their respective first-round matchups.
The Huskies defeated the Furman Paladins 82-71. The Bruins played the UCF Knights and won 75-71. Although the Huskies have a better overall record this season, several factors make this a close matchup.
There’s no denying that the Huskies will go in as favorites. As per KenPom’s predicted score, they’re likely to win 72-68 against UCLA. The odds also favor UConn, listing them as 4.5-point favorites in the upcoming game.
While UConn being the favorite could be overwhelming for UCLA fans, we have already seen some huge upsets in this year’s March Madness. The Bruins could potentially flip the script and shock everyone against UConn.
So, how realistic is an upset tonight in Philly? Let’s find out.
Can UCLA Beat UConn in March Madness?
Tarris Reed Jr. will be very high up on the list of problems for the UCLA Bruins. Averaging over 14 points and 8 rebounds per game this season, Reed has had multiple double-doubles, showing what he is capable of.
However, what he did against the Paladins was far beyond everyone’s imagination. He completely took over the game and almost single-handedly secured the dub for his team. Reed scored 31 points and had 27 rebounds in the game. For the Bruins to go to the Sweet 16 round, they must find a way to stop him.
While facing Reed could be a scary thought after his last performance, the Bruins have some things going in their favor as well. UConn’s star guard, Silas Demary Jr., was ruled out of the first game due to an injury.
Going into tonight’s matchup, the Huskies have listed him as questionable. Even though it’s an upgrade from his earlier status, it’s unlikely that Demary will be 100% ready for the game. Even if he plays, he’ll spend limited minutes on the court.
The Bruins need Tyler Bilodeau back on the court. The star forward has been dealing with a knee strain since the Big Ten Tournament. Getting him back on the floor tonight will significantly increase their chances of winning.
The team took care of business in his absence against the UCF Knights in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Still, his presence against a very strong opponent will help the Bruins advance to the Sweet 16 round.
A lot of things have to fall in the right place for the Bruins to win tonight. The possibility of a win can’t be ruled out, but they will have to play their best game yet while relying on a little luck to get past the Huskies.
