Cal State Bakersfield is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. A former staff member named Kevin Mays, who worked as a temporary assistant to coach Rod Barnes, was also working as a pimp across four states.
As per a recent ESPN report, Mays was moonlighting as a pimp across four states during his time with the basketball program. The shocking revelation was made after Barnes received an anonymous email alleging that Mays was involved in such activities.
In the email, the tipster alleged that Mays was trafficking a woman, whose name has been redacted, for months. “FIX IT OR THE WHOLE STAFF WILL FALL,” the tipster wrote in the email and stated that it was going to be the “first warning and a final warning.”
Upon reading the email, Coach Barnes forwarded it to the university’s human resources office. The email was then sent to the university police, which led to criminal charges against Mays. He is now facing 11 criminal and misdemeanor charges, including felonies such as pimping.
This isn’t the end of the list for Mays. As per ESPN, he is being charged with:
“Possession of automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with intent to sell,” as well as” possession of more than 600 images of youth or child pornography and distribution of obscene matter involving someone under 18 years old.”
It’s truly a dark time for Cal State Bakersfield, and the impact of such serious allegations could be massive.
Former Cal State Bakersfield Staff Member is Being Held Without Bail
Mays has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him. When ESPN reached out to his attorney, David Torres, he declined to comment on the matter. The former Cal State Bakersfield staff member is being held without bail.
Cal State Bakersfield’s senior director of strategic communications, Jennifer Self, told ESPN that the charges against Mays are “deeply concerning.”
“We also viewed this moment as an opportunity to take a broader look at our athletic program,” Self said.
Even though a student of the school wasn’t involved, Self said that the school has consulted with a local human trafficking expert to raise awareness on this subject and give necessary training to the students on campus.
As per the school’s record books, Mays took the job as a temporary assistant coach in June and was getting nearly $3000 per month in salary.
