Former Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery and his wife Margaret are facing serious allegations regarding their behaviour with longtime Hawkeyes radio voice Gary Dolphin, according to recent comments from veteran reporter Scott Dochterman.
Dochterman detailed tense moments involving the McCaffery family and members of the Iowa media on the “Legends and Listeners” podcast.
McCaffery coached the Hawkeyes from 2010 to 2025 before taking the head coaching job at Pennsylvania.
Scott Dochterman Details Allegations Against Fran McCaffery and Wife
Dochterman claimed that longtime Iowa broadcaster Gary Dolphin “had it the worst” among media members dealing with the McCafferys behind the scenes.
According to Dochterman, Fran McCaffery allegedly tried to force Dolphin out of his role on multiple occasions.
“Gary Dolphin had it the worst,” Dochterman said on the podcast. “[McCaffery] tried to force him out twice.”
He also described a heated incident involving Margaret McCaffery after Dolphin asked an Iowa player about a losing streak during an interview.
Dochterman alleged that Margaret McCaffery became furious over the questioning and verbally confronted Dolphin.
“Margaret came unglued, F-bombed him, screamed at him to the point where the leadership of both Iowa and Learfield had to be called in,” he said.
Iowa Media Tension Resurfaces After Fran McCaffery Exit
On May 13 WHO-TV sportscaster Keith Murphy also discussed some uncomfortable interactions involving the McCaffery family during a Coaches vs. Cancer charity event.
He recalled that Fran McCaffery allegedly distanced himself from the event after Murphy criticized how Iowa handled one of the coach’s contract extensions publicly.
According to Murphy, Margaret McCaffery later addressed the crowd and accused him of wanting Fran fired.
“And then Margaret took the stage and said, ‘Thank you for welcoming me, unlike our emcee here who wants my husband fired,’” he said.
Murphy said he never called for McCaffery to lose his job and was simply criticizing the handling of the extension announcement.
Fran McCaffery finished his Iowa tenure with a 297-207 overall record and seven NCAA Tournament appearances across 15 seasons. However, tensions between the program and local media now appear to be resurfacing following his departure.
McCaffery currently serves as the head coach at Penn, while Connor McCaffery remains in the spotlight because of his relationship with WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark and his coaching role at Butler.
