Bill Self Offers Key Update on Darryn Peterson’s Health as Injury Fears Rise Again

Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self has given an update on his star player, Darryn Peterson, after one of their most intense matchups against the BYU Cougars. On Monday, Feb. 2, Self and his Jayhawks will face Grant McCasland’s Texas Tech Red Raiders on the latter’s home court, the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas.

In their previous outing, Self and his program defeated first-year sensation AJ Dybantsa and coach Kevin Young’s BYU Cougars 90-82 at home. Peterson had an explosive first half against BYU but sat out the entirety of the second half. Self was interviewed by @KUHoops on X/Twitter recently, and he gave an update on Peterson and Elmarko Jackson’s availability.

“ Yeah, I think they’re both fine. Elmarko got bumped in his surgically repaired knee, and it’s bothered him. I mean, he said he was feeling really good up until that point, to the best he’s felt, ’cause you know, it gets sore. But he was fine. He was fine today in shoot around. So, now when I say fine, it wasn’t a, you know, if he was fine at 70%. So hopefully he’ll be fine tonight when he turns it up, and Darryn’s fine. Darryn’s ready to go. So, we should have both those guys,” Self detailed.

Coach Self, Peterson, Jackson, and the rest of the Jayhawks are coming off one of their biggest wins of the campaign, as they toppled Dybantsa and the Cougars by eight points, 90-82. Kansas, now holding an overall record of 16-5 (6-2 Big 12), is looking to snag its 17th win of the season against the Red Raiders in front of the latter’s home crowd.

Bill Self Detailed The Sequences That Followed The BYU Cougars Game

Also in the interview on the official Kansas Jayhawks’ X/Twitter page, Bill Self was asked to share his thoughts on the overall home atmosphere against the BYU Cougars. For Self, the hype and support his team got from their fans and supporters was nothing short of great.

The tenured tactician also revealed how his team prepared to fly out the next day for their game amid the adrenaline from the BYU win.

“You know, adrenaline runs off. You know, you wake up Sunday morning and it’s like, ‘God dang, we’re leaving here in six hours to go to Lubbock.’ So we really didn’t do much. Sunday, I got ’em in the gym. We watched about 15 minutes of tape, shot for 20 minutes, and went over scout. That’s, that’s all we did. So today we actually practiced a little bit, didn’t do much, not enough to wear ’em out, but did more than we normally do. So hopefully we’ll be ready to go,” Self shared.
