AP Poll Top 25: Top 3 Takeaways As Duke Steals Top Spot From Michigan, UConn Falls Out Of Top 5

We have a new team at the top of the AP Poll. Duke took the top spot from the Michigan Wolverines, who have now dropped to number three. There are some other surprising changes on the list as well.

The UConn Huskies have fallen out of the top five. Last week, they were in the fifth position behind Michigan, Houston, Duke, and Arizona. The Associated Press top 25 poll was recently published, and there’s a lot to unpack.

The top five teams this week are the Duke Blue Devils, Arizona Wildcats, Michigan Wolverines, Iowa State Cyclones, and the Houston Cougars.

Top 3 Takeaways from AP Poll Top 25

    Duke Claimed the Top Spot

The Blue Devils have been on an impressive run recently. They’re still undefeated at home after 13 games, they’ve won 25 of 27 games this season, and are on a four-game winning streak. They defeated the Michigan Wolverines last week 68-63.

That win helped push them to the front over Michigan, who were the number one team last week. Can Duke retain the top spot? That’s going to be an easy guess. They have an away game against Notre Dame and a home game against the Virginia Cavaliers coming up.

UConn Fell Out of the Top Five

In last week’s rankings, UConn was in the number five position. UConn still boasts an impressive record, 25 total wins with three losses, 15-2 in the conference, 13-2 at home, and 9-1 in away games.

They won their last matchup 73-63 against Villanova but suffered a crushing defeat at home against the Bluejays. They have three more games left in the regular season, against St John’s, Seton Hall, and Marquette.

Iowa State Secured Place in Top 5 Despite Loss

Last week, the Iowa State Cyclones were ranked sixth with a 22-3 record. They had a comfortable 70-67 win against Houston at home last week. They remain unbeaten in home games with a perfect 15-0 record.

However, their away game struggles continued last week as well. The Cyclones played BYU in Provo and lost 69-79. That was their fourth away loss, and they have just four wins on the road. Despite the loss, the Cyclones climbed up two spots to number four in this week’s poll.
