Milan Momcilovic has become the major coup that Mark Pope was looking for amid growing pressure from fans and experts about the competitiveness of the Kentucky program after missing out on some major names.
Most notably, missing out on Tyran Stokes, the top recruit in the 2026 class, who was flirting with Kentucky before eventually committing to Kansas, became a reason for fans to worry about both the ability of Pope to attract the best talent and as a result, the entire Wildcats program as a whole.
But suddenly things are changing. First, the return of Malachi Moreno gave the Lexington outfit a major boost, before Milan Momcilovic’s withdrawal from the NBA Draft gave hope and ultimately redemption as they sealed a rumored $6 Million deal for the Iowa State transfer.
But not everyone is convinced. Analyst Kevin Sweeney has flagged some issues for Pope to address as Moreno and Momcilovic come into a setup that might have been planning without them for the last few weeks.
Why Milan Momcilovic’s Signing Matters for Mark Pope
Beyond just the addition of one of the best shooters in college basketball to the Kentucky setup, this is an especially important moment for Mark Pope.
Momcilovic was reportedly in talks with both Louisville and Arizona before committing to Kentucky, and while the money undoubtedly would have played a role, Pope’s ability to convince the big man to choose the Wildcats shows he still commands the respect and admiration of players across the NCAA league.
At a testing time for him and the program, Momcilovic’s addition keeps the program moving in the right direction and gives them a foothold across the state amid a rise of Louisville under Pat Kelsey.
