Analyst Grills Mark Pope For Underwhelming Season Despite Loaded 2025 Kentucky Transfer Portal Class

While Mark Pope has led Kentucky to the NCAA Tournament this year, it had been a disappointing season overall for the Wildcats. To make matters worse, his high school recruitment had suffered, only managing to recruit one four-star point guard and failing to secure No. 1 prospect Tyran Stokes, losing him to Kansas. This has led the blue blood school to lose much of its mystique, leading many to question if they are still good.

During “The Field Of 68: After Dark” podcast, renowned college sports analyst Jeff Goodman weighed in on the troubles haunting the Kentucky Wildcats and their beleaguered head coach, Mark Pope, right now.

“I love the fact that he hasn’t run and hide from it. He’s out there right now and he’s positive anyway. Like he is a very positive human being and you know I think he probably does think hey you know what we’ll find a way to get it done this year and and as I’m sure he did going into last year and then when things went bad he almost felt like he didn’t know how to handle it. He didn’t know how to handle that the first month or so of the season.” (3:19)

This came after Mark Pope held a Q&A session on X, formerly Twitter, addressing several issues, such as not being able to secure Tyran Stokes, the possibility of losing Malachi Moreno to the NBA draft and many more. During that Q&A session, he boldly claimed that Kentucky is the biggest brand in basketball, causing many to raise their eyebrows given that they had struggled since John Calipari left the program.

Pope did make up for it with his transfer portal recruitment, acquiring Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, but with Moreno possibly leaving, he may be dipping into the portal again for a center.

Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats Still Have Plenty of Problems Heading Into the Next Season

As Malachi Moreno contemplates on leaving for the NBA draft, Mark Pope is currently facing a lot of problems with their roster. Should Moreno leave, they would lack that star player that the team could be anchored around, In addition, they also lack proven scorers.

Alex Wilkins and redshirt freshman Braydon Hawthorne do have a lot of potential, but they are still relatively unproven. It is likely that one of them would step up, but it is still unclear on who will be the team’s new star.
