Makai Lemon is going to the Philadelphia Eagles. The USC man was expected to be a top-20 pick in this year’s draft, and he just made it so after dropping from the No. 13, where he was initially expected to go, to No. 20.
It’s not unexpected for a player who won the Fred Biletnikoff Award this past season to be a first-round pick. He did so on the back of 1156 receiving yards (eighth most in the nation), with 11 touchdown catches (Tied ninth in the country), in 79 receptions (11th in the country).
Playing football was almost certainly always on Lemon’s mind, as his father, Mike Lemon, was a standout running back at UNLV. Not much is known of his mother, Brandy Lemon, who is of Hawaiian descent. This is why his name, Makai, has Polynesian roots.
His family also has other notable athletes, with his uncle Tim Lemon being a second-round MLB pick for the St. Louis Cardinals. He also signed a letter of intent to play college football at Washington State before turning to pro baseball. After leaving the Cardinals organization, he attempted to walk on with the Colorado Buffaloes football program. Another of his uncles, Jerry Lemon, played college baseball at Fresno State.
He’s also related to three-time MLB All-Star and 1984 World Series champion Chet Lemon, who is his great-uncle.
Makai Lemon wanted to play for the Los Angeles Rams
Earlier in the week, Makai Lemon was asked about the possibility of playing for the Los Angeles Rams, with whom he was heavily linked at the time. Here’s what the USC Trojans’ playmaker had to say about the possibility. He seemed excited about it.
“I feel like it’d be a perfect fit, definitely,” Lemon said. “Just adding my play style, adding what I can do to the team.”
“Just learning from them guys,” Lemon added. “They’ve had so much production and been in the league and seen so much and done so much. So, to be alongside them would mean a lot.”
He will have to forget about this opportunity, as the Los Angeles Rams made the most surprising pick in the draft so far by taking Alabama’s quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick. The choice was highly surprising as some even expected Simpson to fall to the second round of the event. Lemon instead is going to Philadelphia.
