Niumatalolo was named the next head coach of San Jose State on January 21, 2024, signing a five-year deal, however, his contract details in 2024 are undisclosed.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Niumatalolo had signed a five-year deal with the Spartans after Brent Brennan left the program to become head coach of the Arizona Wildcats.
San Jose State’s Athletics director, Jeff Konya, confirmed the deal in January 2024 by saying, “We are thrilled that Coach Niumatalolo has accepted the opportunity to lead our football program.”
“He is a proven winner and brought the Naval Academy to unprecedented heights by winning eight or more games in nine seasons during his tenure. It’s impressive when you see that he had success against national brands like Notre Dame, Virginia, Kansas State, and Pittsburgh, and even finished ranked inside the top 25 twice.”
Konya continued, “We believe he is the right fit to build off the foundation laid here at San José State and will have the Spartans competing for Mountain West championships on a consistent basis.”
Niumatalolo has previously been a head coach with Navy and had been with the Midshipmen between 2007 and 2022. He achieved an enormous amount of success with the program, winning three AAC West Divisions and six bowl games.
Overall, Niumatalolo had a 109-83 record at Navy. However, with three consecutive seasons of four wins or fewer, his services were not retained in Annapolis following the 2022 season, and he was replaced by Brian Newberry.
After leaving the Midshipmen, Niumatalolo joined UCLA to coach tight ends under Chip Kelly for one season. ESPN reports that the experience with the Bruins has given Niumatalolo invaluable experience to “learn the nuances of the transfer portal and NIL to prepare him.”
