Jonah Williams Injury Update: What Happened To Texas’ Two-Sport Star?

Texas football and baseball star Jonah Williams won’t be able to partake in the rest of the 2026 SEC baseball season, although there seems to be a chance that he could be ready for the football season later in the year. The safety and outfielder reaggravated a shoulder injury, which required him to undergo surgery recently.

The news was reported by Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods, who said the following on an Instagram post by the outlet:

“Texas two-sport athlete Jonah Williams will undergo shoulder surgery after re-injuring the shoulder while diving for a ball in foul territory. The procedure will end his baseball season.”

On3’s Joseph Cook complemented the original reporting, sharing that the school seems confident that he will recover in time for the upcoming football season.

“Texas has announced Williams will have season-ending surgery. He is ‘expected to be cleared for the start of the 2026 football campaign,’ according to the school,” wrote On3’s Joseph Cook.

Jim Schlossnagle and Steve Sarkisian’s Agreement on How To Deal With Jonah Williams Athletic Load

According to several reports, Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle and football coach Steve Sarkisian are in constant contact to balance out Jonah Williams athletic load between both programs.

Schlossnagle is plenty clear that the priority for Texas is that Williams is ready for the football team. He said this in an interview this January.

“I would anticipate, as Jonah becomes more of a priority in the defense of football, that they’re going to want him around more, and that’s okay; that’s part of the deal,” Schlossnagle said. “I’ve been through that several times with football-baseball players, and it’s actually not that tough to navigate.”

“You just have to be number one; you have to make sure you stay within the confines of the rules, because they’re only allowed twenty hours a week of activity. So luckily, a baseball game, even if it lasts seven hours, only counts as three. But yeah, we’ll work our way through it, and if anybody can handle that, Jonah can do that,” he added.

While Steve Sarkisian is certainly tracking the situation, he’s most likely relieved that the baseball team is allowing him to focus completely on his recovery and on preparing for the upcoming football season.
