In a tragic moment for college football and specially for Tulane, one of their incoming recruits in Deontavis Cooper has sadly passed away following a car crash in Florida.
The sad news has sent ripples across the college football community, and one of the people sending their condolences is Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall, who appeared to know Deontavis Cooper fairly well following his own time at Tulane and was devastated by the loss.
Jon Sumrall took to X to write – “Heart broken. Coop was a fun guy to recruit. He had a vibrant and infectious personality. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and @tcchsyjfootball.”
Cooper was a favorite at the Thomas County Central football program and head coach Justin Rogers also paid tribute to him following the untimely passing.
“We were so excited to watch him begin the next chapter of his life at Tulane next week and continue pursuing his dream of playing college football,” Rogers said on social media.
“While that dream was cut far too short, the impact he made on his teammates, coaches, teachers, friends, and family will last forever.”
Rogers also described Cooper as “one of those rare young men who could light up a room with his smile and make everyone around him feel valued.”
“Forever a Yellow Jacket. Forever family.”
More Details About Deontavis Cooper’s Passing
According to official records, Cooper was riding in the back seat of a sedan car and was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Tallahassee, Florida.
The Florida Highway Patrol claim that the vehicle struck a culvert, went airborne and then crashed into a utility pole before completely overturning. Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
