Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire Weighs In on Brendan Sorsby’s Comeback After Injunction News: “He’s Recovering”

Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire is the latest figure from the program to react to transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s evolving gambling situation. Sorsby has received a temporary injunction from a Texas judge, allowing him to play in the 2026 season despite the NCAA imposing permanent ineligibility before the court’s ruling.

Sorsby, who placed more than 9,000 bets worth over $90,000 across several years, including at least 40 bets involving Indiana football games in his freshman season, will serve a two-game suspension but will be eligible to play in the Red Raiders’ Week 3 game against Houston.

On Wednesday afternoon, McGuire was interacting with fans when someone from the crowd asked about Sorsby playing for Texas Tech in the 2026 season. According to Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle, McGuire said that the possibility of Sorsby playing in Week 3 is “still a stretch.”

    McGuire added:

“He’s recovering from an addiction. … I’ve sat down with this young man, and what he’s going through is serious.”

McGuire’s statement was similar to Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt’s earlier announcement to the growing discourse around the transfer quarterback.

Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt Prioritizes Brendan Sorsby’s Recovery Amid Backlash

Earlier Wednesday, Kirby Hocutt made his feelings clear on the growing noise surrounding Brendan Sorsby, with many believing he hurt the integrity of the sport by gambling even on games his team was involved in.

Despite what many in college sports are thinking, Hocutt wants the best for Sorsby. The athletic director acknowledged that Sorsby is dealing with something serious and the program will focus on his recovery from gambling addiction.

“We’re taking it one day at a time as he is,” Hocutt said in his released statement. “We’ll evaluate his recovery, compliance and readiness as we go. We are watching closely, we are deeply committed to his progress and well-being, and we are not operating on blind faith. We are operating on a comprehensive clinical and compliance structure that we committed to before the court ruled in Brendan’s lawsuit against the NCAA and that Brendan committed to as a condition of his return to our football program.”

Texas Tech’s support of Brendan Sorsby is coming at a cost as well. The Georgia Bulldogs have already announced that they will no longer schedule games with the Red Raiders in the near future, apart from those games that are already in the books.

Meanwhile, the NCAA is expected to appeal the court’s ruling on Sorsby, as they remain firm with their recommendation to permanently render the quarterback ineligible to play again in college sports.
