Cody Campbell has been trying his best to convince the world that Brendan Sorsby’s commitment to Texas Tech shouldn’t be chalked off amid the sensitivities around his betting scandal, but for the most part, it has fallen on deaf ears.
When a judge ruled in Sorsby’s favor on Monday, experts and fans alike jumped in to criticize the decision, leaving Campbell with lots of cleaning up to do. And perhaps some of that was on display via his social media as Campbell quoted Nate Longshore, a private quarterbacks coach who offered some support for Texas Tech as he tried to explain why the Red Raiders have to stand by Sorsby.
Replying to Longshore, who was a quarterback at Cal before going on to stints as an assistant coach at a high school and later UNLV, Campbell said one particular part of the post stood out to him, and proceeded to specify it:
“There is a difference between defending the person and defending the mistake. Texas Tech is in an impossible spot. Deep down, they may have hoped the final ruling would remove the decision from their hands. Exhaust every option, support the player, let the process play out, and if he is ruled ineligible, accept it. That is the cleanest outcome for a program trying to balance loyalty, discipline, public pressure, and competitive integrity.”
Where Does Brendan Sorsby Currently Stand?
Brendan Sorsby was given relief in the latest temporary injunction by a Texas district court, basically stopping enforcement of the NCAA’s ban on the player.
As a result, he can technically play for Texas Tech in the new season, but with more and more teams threatening to not play the Red Raiders and an NCAA appeal inevitable, the situation is far from straightforward. It looks unlikely that Sorsby will use the NFL supplemental draft to enter the league and will perhaps fight this until the end to get a chance to be eligible for one final year.
