As the 2025 college football season approaches, all eyes in Knoxville are on the Tennessee Volunteers’ quarterback room. The SEC may witness one of its most captivating match-ups between Joey Aguilar and Jake Merklinger as the team’s development unfolds.

Tennessee’s Quarterback Competition: Joey Aguilar vs. Jake Merklinger
The team depends heavily on quarterback play to succeed in its fast-offensive system, which demands high speeds and scoring output. Tennessee’s coaching staff is working on finalizing its backup quarterback scenario.
The matchup between Aguilar and Merklinger creates an exciting competition because each brings different qualifications and levels of experience to the table.
Aguilar joins Knoxville’s Tennessee team after starting the quarterback position twice at Appalachian State, leading up to his transfer to UCLA. Additionally, when he was at UCLA, he recorded 3,003 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. During the 2024 season, he had a 56% completion rate.
His field awareness, extended arm movements, and extensive game experience make him an ideal candidate for the starting position. His transfer to Tennessee signals that the Vols are seeking a seasoned leader to guide their offense.
Since entering the program as a highly rated recruit, Merklinger has risen through the ranks in Tennessee’s offensive playbook. His knowledge of the playbook from his minimal college experience provides a significant advantage in the competition.
During the 2024 season at Tennessee, he recorded six completions on nine attempts for 48 yards. His records further showed 22 rushing yards on seven carries. Though his numbers are modest, Merklinger has had a 15-month head start in the system, which could prove valuable in the QB1 battle.
Aguilar brings proven production and game-day experience to the team, while Merklinger offers continuity and familiarity with Tennessee’s offensive scheme.
