The Ohio State Buckeyes’ new coaching staff addition has fans worried about the future of their star wide receiver, Jeremiah Smith. Their newest hire is coming from the NFL, more specifically, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Arthur Smith played college football for North Carolina from 2001 to 2005. The following year, he started his coaching journey as a graduate assistant. Over the years, he was promoted to bigger roles across college football and the NFL.
Smith’s longest stint was with the Tennessee Titans for nearly a decade. He joined the Steelers in 2024 as their offensive coordinator. Now, Smith is joining the Ohio State Buckeyes at the same position.
“Steelers OC Arthur Smith is expected to become the next offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Smith has received multiple requests for NFL HC and OC interviews this cycle. Smith has engineered multiple top 10 offenses in the NFL, and now he lands in college,” Ian Rapoport reported.
Fans have doubts about Arthur’s ability to manage Smith and they’re already expressing concern for what the future might hold for the star wide receiver.
“R.I.P. Jeremiah Smith, transfer asap bro,” a fan wrote.
“Jeremiah Smith with Arthur Smith’s concepts in college,” a fan wrote.
“Jeremiah Smith is gonna get like 3 catches every other game 😂😂😂 f**kin leading receiver gonna be the 3rd string TE. I CANT WAIT!!!!” a fan wrote.
“Jeremiah smith about to have 500 yards,” a fan wrote.
“Jeremiah Smith should’ve transferred. Good luck,” a fan wrote.
It’s common for fans to be concerned about new hires, especially when they’ve seen glory days in recent years. However, it’s possible and highly likely that Smith will benefit from the presence of an NFL OC in the coaching staff.
Jeremiah Smith Endorsed Brian Hartline
Brian Hartline was the offensive coordinator & wide receivers coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2025. In December 2025, he was hired by the South Florida Bulls as their head coach, making it Hartline’s first head coaching stint.
Despite parting ways with Ohio State, Hartline is receiving support from his former players. During an interview with I Am Athlete, Smith heaped praise on Hartline and urged players to consider joining his program.
“They got a good coach,” Smith said, “So I feel like everybody should go to USF, because that man is going to develop you into a first-rounder.”
“He’s going to challenge you, don’t matter what it is. The thing with coach Hartline [is] the little things matter with him: stance and start, the way you get in and out of breaks, he just challenge[s] you to tap into your mind a little bit as well.”
Hartline coached Smith for two years and was part of the Buckeyes 2024 national title-winning campaign.
