The departure of Michigan AD Warde Manuel was bound to cause ripples in the college football world, and some of the biggest names in the sport are now speaking out about the consequences of it, with Urban Meyer making his feelings known along with admitting he has spoken to Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham about what the future might hold amid grave uncertainty for the program.
Speaking on his own podcast called the “Triple Option Show”, Urban Meyer opened up about his feelings on where Michigan finds itself.
“There’s two things to look at, number one, how does Kyle Whittingham move forward because he has to and it has to happen fast. You’re gonna have a new AD come in, you’re gonna have a President obviously that supports Kyle but who knows if you stub your toe a few times and you get an AD that forgets about the turmoil he took over,” Meyer said.
“I’ve had some conversations with Coach Whit and I’m just gonna keep that between us. And number two, what will this era go down as? Basketball just recently (won) and the AD gets let go because of that, yet the report comes out, (he) really didn’t do anything wrong. So, I know what’s happening in Ann Arbor. They want this to go away as fast as possible and focus on playing some football.”
Urban Meyer on the Pressures Kyle Whittingham Will Have to Deal With at Michigan
Urban Meyer also spoke on his podcast about the pressures Kyle Whittingham will need to face at Michigan despite having a job at Utah earlier.
“Coach Whit has been at Utah and I love Utah, but Utah doesn’t have the same pressures that that other place has up north,” Meyer said.
“But it’s also what in the hell happened up there. And that’s very un-Wolverine-like, what’s taken place there the last five years. … Kyle [Whittingham] loves his team, he loves his players, the quarterbacks have got to get much better.”
Michigan football kicks off its campaign against Western Michigan Broncos on Sept. 5 at Ann Arbor.
